Lime-burning demonstrations
SPAB Cymru at Craig Gwladus
Working with SPAB Cymru, Manifest carried out lime-burning demonstrations at their working party at Craig Gwladus, near Neath, south Wales. Two types of local stone were burnt – the first a blue lias from Aberthawe (kindly donated by Tarmac), which gives a feebly hydraulic lime suitable for exposed locations. The second was a pure, Carboniferous limestone from nearby Carmel. Some of the burns were carried out using local hazel charcoal, which was made in an adjacent kiln using wood cut directly from Craig Gwladus, reducing even further the potential carbon debt of lime as a building material.
