Talk on Lime Burning at the SPAB Autumn Repair Course
Further to our work last summer, burning local grey chalk in a field kiln at the SPAB’s Old House Project and Working Party in Boxley, Kent, we were delighted to be invited back to present our findings to delegates at the Autumn Repair Course. This also gave us the opportunity to inspect the feebly hydraulic lime mortar made from our own quicklime, incorporated in the walled gardens of nearby Boxley Abbey – it seems to have set very well, with a very pleasant texture and appearance. This bodes well for the resurrection of this important type of lime, now much under-used in Britain – keep an eye on our lime projects for further developments!
